The project is related to the National Road 106 Jonica between km 49+485 and km 51+750. The layout has a length of about 3,7 km of which nearly 2.3 as tunnels. Long the alignment, 4 tunnels and n. 2 viaducts are located.

The St. Antonino tunnel excavation was the most challenging work. In the evening of the 03.12.2007, in coincidence with the preparation of the St. Barbara ceremony, during the excavation on the Reggio Calabria side, the slope at the tunnel entrance collapsed involving an impressive mass of ground, clearly delineated in the slope top part, which has overwhelmed and destroyed the tunnels under construction. The collapsed area (nearly 17,000 square meters) has a quadrangular shape and extends from the morphological saddle up to the entrance area. The failure occurred in a complex and articulated geological and geomorphological context, mainly characterized by clayey-marly deposits. At the time of collapse, the two tunnels (upstream and downstream) had reached a length of 171 m and 183 m respectively.

Andrea Antiga, as Soil’s Technical Director, signed the “detailed design for construction” for the restoration and the completion works and specifically for the stabilization of the collapsed slopes and the interventions for the reconstruction of the twin-tube tunnel. He was also responsible for assistance during construction. The project also comprehended the construction of other 3 tunnels. Pietro Coppola, as Soil’s Project Manager, was in charge for the main geotechnical and structural designs and numerical analyses.
